About Stereotypes in Intercultural Communication

On October 21, 2020, the Petrozavodsk campus of RANEPA welcomed Dr Igor Krasnov, an Associate Professor of the Institute of Foreign Languages of Petrozavodsk State University and a translator, who gave a lecture to the first-year students of the training course “Effective state and municipal administration.”

The lecturer explained to the audience that stereotypes imply a static view on a person and a society as a whole, as well as the desire to reduce all people to a limited number of types with a standard set of characteristics. This may result in misidentification of interlocutors, in misinterpretation of their actions, and, ultimately, in serious interference in establishing and conducting a dialogue between the representatives of different cultures.

Based on examples from the history of relations between Russia and the United States, and examples from his own meetings with the Americans, Igor Krasnov revealed the reasons that influence the emergence of stereotypes. He explained their essence and role in the process of intercultural communication. During the meeting, Igor Krasnov stressed the importance of a confident command of English which can be the key to understanding the cultures of English-speaking countries, and thus to establishing good partnerships and successful international cooperation. According to the lecturer, the best way to achieve such cooperation is public diplomacy, including various programmes of student academic mobility.
