Discovering Countries and Cultures: Morocco

On 27 May, 2020, the first-year students specializing in economics made a virtual trip to the most beautiful and the most visited cities in Morocco. Their guide was Wissam Bakiz, a Master student of the Higher School of Economics and Trade in Marrakech (Ecoles des Hautes Etudes Economiques et Commerciales de Marrakech).

In English, Wissam spoke about Rabat, the capital of Morocco, as well as about Casablanca, Agadir, and Marrakech. Rabat, being the administrative centre of the country, preserves the Arab rhythm of life and a unique cultural flavour. Nowadays, Casablanca has become the economic centre of the Kingdom and impresses with its avant-garde architecture and new technologies. The fans of the ocean and surfing will like the resort of Agadir. It will also appeal to romantics who like to walk under the setting sun. According to Wissam, Marrakech is the heart and soul of Morocco, the most colourful and memorable place in the country. Listening to his story, admiring the beautiful views of the country, all participants of the meeting wanted to see the Moroccan beauty with their own eyes.

With great interest, the guest from the Southern Kingdom asked the students questions about Petrozavodsk and Karelia, and curiously examined photos of our Northern region.

At the end of the lesson, Wissam conducted a mini workshop in Arabic. He speaks Arabic, Tamazight (one of the Berber dialects), English, and French. Surprisingly, all these languages are widely spoken on the territory of Morocco and many people there speak them perfectly.

Participating in such meetings, students actively use a foreign language as a tool for learning about a different linguistic culture and for expanding their individual worldview, which is very important for preparing young people for life in a multi-ethnic and multicultural environment.
