Tatyana Sachuk, Expert of the Karelia Branch of RANEPA, Takes Part in the Interregional Online Conference

On May 14, 2020, the interregional online conference "Current aspects of spatial change management in Russia" was held. The conference was organized by the Institute of Management and Regional Development of the Presidential Academy (RANEPA) and the Department of Territorial Development named after V. L. Glazychev of the Institute of Social Sciences of RANEPA.

The conference was attended by Vice-Rector of the Academy Dmitry Butashin, by well-known Russian experts Alexander Puzanov (Institute of City Economics), Irina Starodubrovskaya (Gaidar Institute for Economic Policy), Maria Gunko (Institute of Geography of the RAS), by experts of the regional campuses of the Academy Natalya Kiseleva (Pyatigorsk), Sergey Gordeev (Chelyabinsk), Tatyana Sachuk (the Karelia branch, Petrozavodsk), by graduate students of the Department named after V.L. Glazychev. The discussion was moderated by RANEPA Professor Emil Marquart.

Tatyana Sachuk in her speech focused on the trends of spatial changes and the trends of compression of the developed space in Karelia.  It was noted that the compression processes are typical for all regions of the North, when measures of the state policy of labour migration were reduced in order to develop the natural resources of the Northern territories. On the other hand, as the expert noted, Karelia has a number of peculiarities of this process.

"Overall, the residents and business of Karelia have managed to adapt to the objective realities of a market economy,” says Tatyana Sachuk.  “New areas of specialization of activities (tourism) have developed, the region's geographical position (border location, proximity to St. Petersburg) is actively used, territories are re-used (landmarks are created, villages are restored),  the suburbs of the cities are developing, including within Petrozavodsk agglomeration, new clusters are shaped and developed.”

As for the negative effects of compression, differentiated support measures are needed within the framework of spatial planning and increasing the attractiveness of individual territories based on their competitive advantages."
